My story

I started on prescription painkillers in 2005, and it led to heroin. I couldn't picture living, even though I wanted to. Now I wear a heart on my sleeve for honesty and openness, and I want the next person to feel proud, look good, and feel better.

Which medication is which

  • Methadone

    A full opioid agonist taken daily as a liquid, usually at a licensed clinic. It prevents withdrawal and cravings.

Myth: It is just trading one drug for another

Fact: Medication treatment steadies your brain chemistry so you stop chasing a high and start rebuilding your life.

Myth: You are not really in recovery on MAT

Fact: Recovery is about getting your life back. Medication is one of the most proven ways to do it.

Myth: You have to get off it fast

Fact: Longer treatment is linked to better outcomes. How long is a choice between you and your provider.

Questions people ask

Will methadone make me feel high?

At a stable dose, most people feel normal, not high. Tell your clinic if you feel drowsy, especially after a dose change.

How often do I have to go to the clinic?

Usually every day at first. Take-home doses can be earned over time as you show stability.

Can I work while on treatment?

Yes. Many people work full time while on methadone or Suboxone.

What if I miss a dose?

Call your clinic or prescriber. Do not double up on your own.
